Dome warping

@appleflapjc

When you project an image on the dome, it warps and wraps around the dome.
So to not get a distorted image I created some video files in After Effects to pre distort the image so when it warps, it gets re-warped and we’ll have a somewhat clean image.

If you project a clean image on the dome the sides will get stretched.

First I looked into how a checkerboard wraps around a ball.

As you can see, the sides are squished and in front its clear, this is the exact opposite of what happens when you project an image on the dome, so this is what I have to simulate in After Effects.

First I grabbed my material,

After that I warped it to make it look like this.

I did this with multiple surfaces.
After rendering the test file I tested it out on the dome and re adjusted it later.
One problem we faced while testing was that the paint layer was too thick and we needed to repaint the dome again.

Attaching the MDF sheet to the pedestal

On the next day I took the MDF sheet and started drilling holes in the material and putting screws in the small triangular pieces. However the quality of the “wood” material was poor and the pieces kept cracking. I made a few more pieces (already at least 40 all together) and started using both glue and screws to attach everything together to the pedestal. Nothing seemed to be solving my issue with the cracks though, so I eventually gave up and got back to the drawing board again.

I Knew it wasn’t a good Idea to attach the wrap directly to the corners of the pedestal but I didn’t have much choice at this point. I just took some screws and started drilling.

Surprisingly enough the pedestal didn’t crack from the screws I put into it and the mdf sheet could actually hold on to the “wood” but the shape was no longer perfectly round.

From then on I just cut the mdf sheet to size and called it a day.

Building the installation

As the Fuselage concept was turned down I came up with a different way of attaching the mdf sheet around the pedestal, using the supports shown in the previous post.

However we didn’t have enough material to build all of these supports so I had to think of another way to do this.

With the wrapped and tied mdf sheet around the pedestal, I noticed that the shape was pretty much perfectly suiting our needs already, it just needed to be attached to the pedestal.

I took a sheet of paper and measured each of the four corners between the pedestal and the MDF wrap, only to notice they were the same triangular shape, proving the shape of the wrap was already circular.

To attatch the MDF to the pedestal I only needed to make enough triangles and attach them to the pedestal thus creating mounting points for the MDF Sheet.

I needed to make 18 pieces of the same kind and attatch 3 of them to each corner on each side (photo 1). I made them and attatched them with screws on the outside. A few of them cracked while drilling holes inside the “wood” so at the end I ended up making about 30 of those pieces.

Sponsor Run 2.0

Today Jay-Cee and I went on a second sponsor gathering trip. This time we were armed with a plan and an updated one-pager. We went to our own store to update Petrushka on our plan and installation as well. When we did that, we got a small sponsorship put of that as well. We also went to artez, wilmink theater and metropool. Which unfortunately were either closed or not able to sponsor us.

We did spark a lot of interest in Kaj’s guitar store and Weersel music. We are going back there next tuesday to discuss it more, with the owners.
