Database Discussion

For our installation we need a database system. It would be most useful if we could integrate it with the marketing for our sponsors.

There are 3 options:

  • We keep a database with songs made by the users. They will be able to download their song through a QR code.
  • We put QR codes on some posters (a poster for each institution), they get some information on the institution and they give us some feedback on who they are and why they like the chosen ‘planet’. We save this information in the database
  • We remember what planet was their ‘favorite’. The user will get the QR code for their favorite planet at the end of the ‘play’ stage. Now they get some info and they give us theirs etc.

We can also do a combination of 2 of these or do all 3. Downloading your song might be difficult to achieve with unity and all. But we will try it, if this doesn’t work, we will use one of the other two. If it does, then we shall use either this option or a combination.

We already have the designs for the planets so creating posters for them should not be too difficult. We will start making those soon, the building on the database will start this weekend/next week.

QR code research and ideas

I started to research QR codes about a week ago because we want to implement them in our installation. We decided to make posters or stickers with QR codes that will be placed near the music locations we chose.

When the user scans the QR code he receives more information about the place and also he can complete a short questionaire about his time in Enschede if he wishes too.

Another idea which is harder to implement would be to use the QR codes together with our database. After the user finishes his experience a QR code will pop up on screen. If the user scans it he will receive a download link to his song as well as a suggestion of a place to visit based on his choices.

QR codes prove to be easy to modify and part of them could be covered in Illustrator and still work. This makes it easy to integrate them in posters or flyers. The color can be changed as well and generally it just needs to be darker on a white background to be readable.

Finally Building the actual drum pads

After a lot of testing we finally have build actual drum pads.

But the Piezos really behave differently on whatever material, so we have to get the placement and material combination right to get the triggering to work.

We finally stumbled upon this combination that works the best:
From top to bottom:
– Rubbermat
– Plywood
– Anti slip mat
– Anti slip mat with a hole in it
– Piezo facing upwards
– Plywood
– Anti slip mat
– MDF (our asteroid belt)

It didn’t work until you all hot glue it together.

After a bunch of cheering we’ve made another one.
In the previous testing I broke two piezo elements so It was just 2 for now.

Creating the interface video’s

Øyvind and Thom recorded a voice today over so I could create the interface animation for Unity.
I decided to use a video that we’re just putting into unity.

I made four video’s
– Planet showcase video to lure potential users in.
– Intro startup video as an explanation on how to use the installation.
– Overlay video for indicating how much time you’ve got and how much time you have to loop.
– Final video thanking the user and showing the QR code.

I used dots as placeholders in this version.
I’m very happy how it turned out.

Drum Pad Testing 2.0

Today we tested the piezo sensors with the acquired materials and the drumsticks. We had some problems with the triggering in the beginning. After some messing around with the sensors themselves they started misbehaving. After we fixed them we needed to figure out the correct materials and especially, the correct layering of materials.

We figured out that the best layering is the following: The base wood (the asteroid belt) then some foamy stuff we bought, with a cutout for the piezo. Then an optional piece of wood with the rubber mat on top. Or the rubber mat on top directly. This seemed to trigger the best. We still need to test it in the correct shape and size and decide the sweet spot with tolerance.
