Reflection – Jay-Cee

A short reflection about the entire project.

This was a really fun project, we had a lot of fun as a team and I think the installation turned out to be very fun as well. Firstly, working with people from different countries is very interesting. Sometimes a little too interesting that it took our attention away from the project and started to talk a lot about culture.
We all are interested in the project and that really helped with the drive of our team.
But we started building and realizing our concept too late. We had to pressure cook ourselves these last two weeks and work extra hard to get things done.
Other than that I think the last two weeks were very well planned for me.

This project I worked on a lot of different stuff. I worked together with Thom on the Stylesheet and created a nice colorful styling for our installation with a lot of personality. I have also used my animation skills to assist in some videos, but mainly to create the interface and bring it to life. I had some specific challenges to make the animation fit the weird spherical screen right but I figured it out and it turned out great!

I wasn’t as much a speciality guy in this project. I took more task upon me than the tasks were I was comfortable with. Which is not a problem to be honest, I learned a lot from it. For instance I worked a lot on soldering and hardware.
What I really liked this project was working together with Thom to communicate with sponsors and the client. This was very useful to me because this is something where I wanted to learn more of.
I think I have also improved in teamwork and communication, when there is miscommunication I try to backtrack to see what was wrong and try to not make the same mistake again.
I haven’t done as much animating as I’d like to. There were still elements that I wanted to animate for the promotional videos but there wasn’t enough time, or it was rather poorly planned. But at least I’d animated all the cutscenes on the installation itself, which was a unique and new experience.

I’m happy how the installation has turned out. I talked a lot with Margit about the experience of the installation and I really tried to push it, which was a succes in my opinion. It’s colorful, bold and loud (if you want it to be). The music added bring a lot of atmosphere and wonder to the story Thom wrote. The planet designs of Andre really looked cool and the promotional videos of Øyvind really tied the story together.
Other than that the concept is also technically very sturdy thanks to Iza.
And Vasil was like the gluten that holds the entire installation together with concept drawings, building and 3D stuff.

Next time there are a lot of things we have to do better, but most things are all connected to one main thing: Planning. Only after many, many conversations with the scrum teacher we slowly got to the point that our planning was on point. He also helped us a lot with our communication issues. When the planning and communication got better we really started to work hard. (But also the deadline was just two weeks from then so we had to). But that isn’t just a team problem, I personally struggle to get my own planning right and I definitely learned a lot about myself and planning this project.

Final interface tweaks

This is the last weekend and these are the tweaks I’ve made to the final iteration of the interface.
I’ve added drum sticks instead of hands,
Created a version that redirects you to the poster and a version with a smaller QR code since you couldn’t scan the big one.

Wiring inside the machine

D7B2038D-E739-4FE7-BEC9-F022773430C4.GIF

This is me putting the wires inside the machine.
I also used those little plug thingies so we can easily plug those drum pads in and out so Izabela could take them home to test and tweak them.
The wires go from the front to under the dome to against the sides of the insides of the projection chamber to the back to around the ring and back in front again where the arduino and the buttons are gonna be.
I used foam and pins to keep the wires in place since I couldn’t use duct tape.

Planet design

@izabelatyprowicz and I, @appleflapjc added the textures and the bump maps to the planets. To make them look nicer we tried to add a cloud layer. We tried out all sorts of things until Thom, @uselessmarkies , created a cloud layer that worked with our planets.
I added different lighting sources to give the planets more vibrance.
We asked Vasil, @vasil1hristov and Andrei, @burdetiadrian8 to rework some of the textures because they didn’t really fit on a sphere.
But now they’re all right and look really good.
I also created labels so that the user knows what planet they are using.

New attraction mode

Andrei made a cool artwork where he took the map of Enschede and made a galaxy from it.
I implemented it in the Interface as an attraction mode before you use the machine.
I took some layers apart so when it moves it looks really cool and dynamic. This illustrates the vast galaxy of Enschede and when you’re going to play with our installation, you’re going to explore some of the planets inside this amazing galaxy.

Wiring the drumpads

For the drumpads to fit on the installation I had to make the wires longer so I did.
I don’t have any pictures of this but I stripped the previous wires and soldered a longer wire to the piezos. I kept them together with painting-tape.
I also helped Iza today with the technical part. Implementing the videos and resizing the planets.

Finally Building the actual drum pads

After a lot of testing we finally have build actual drum pads.
@izabelatyprowicz @uselessmarkies @appleflapjc

But the Piezos really behave differently on whatever material, so we have to get the placement and material combination right to get the triggering to work.

We finally stumbled upon this combination that works the best:
From top to bottom:
– Rubbermat
– Plywood
– Anti slip mat
– Anti slip mat with a hole in it
– Piezo facing upwards
– Plywood
– Anti slip mat
– MDF (our asteroid belt)

It didn’t work until you all hot glue it together.

After a bunch of cheering we’ve made another one.
In the previous testing I broke two piezo elements so It was just 2 for now.

Creating the interface video’s

Øyvind and Thom recorded a voice today over so I could create the interface animation for Unity.
I decided to use a video that we’re just putting into unity.

I made four video’s
– Planet showcase video to lure potential users in.
– Intro startup video as an explanation on how to use the installation.
– Overlay video for indicating how much time you’ve got and how much time you have to loop.
– Final video thanking the user and showing the QR code.

I used dots as placeholders in this version.
I’m very happy how it turned out.
